General James Mattis is passionate and inspiring without peer, and the current
commander of United States Central Command (USCENTCOM). As a Major General,
and the commander of the 1st Marine Division in Kuwait in March of 2003, his
Message to All Hands
on the Eve of Battle was a masterful exhortation –
"... Be the hunter, and not the hunted ... Engage your
brain before you engage your weapon. Share your courage with each other.
Keep faith in your comrades on your left and right and Marine Air overhead.
Fight with a happy heart and strong spirit."

My favorite General Mattis story appears below the poster.
When General Charles Krulak was Commandant, he and his wife would bake hundreds
and hundreds of Christmas cookies and package them in
small bundles. Then on Christmas day, the Commandant would load his vehicle at
0400 and drive himself to every Marine guard post in the
Washington-Annapolis-Baltimore area to deliver a small package of Christmas
cookies to whatever Marines were pulling guard duty that day.
At the Quantico command center, he gave a package to the Lance Corporal on duty.
He asked, "Who's the officer of the day?" The Lance Corporal said, "Sir,
it's Brigadier General Mattis." And General Krulak said, "No, no, no. I
know who General Mattis is. I mean, who's the officer of the day today,
Christmas day?" The Lance Corporal, feeling a little anxious, said, "Sir,
it is Brigadier General Mattis."
About that time, the Commandant spotted the daybed in the back room. He said,
"No, Lance Corporal. Who slept in that bed last
night?" The Lance Corporal said, "Sir, it was Brigadier General Mattis."
About that time Brigadier General Mattis came in – in a
duty uniform with a sword, and General Krulak said, "Jim, what are you
doing here on Christmas day? Why do you have duty?" General Mattis told
him that the young officer who was scheduled to have duty on Christmas
day had a family, and General Mattis decided it was better for the young
officer to spend Christmas Day with his family, and so he chose to have
duty on Christmas Day.
When General Krulak shared this anecdote, he closed with, "That's the
kind of officer that Jim Mattis is."

'Till the last landing's made, and we stand unafraid, on a shore no mortal has seen, 'Till the last bugle call, sounds taps for us all, It's Semper Fidelis, MARINE! -- Palmer Brown, LtCol, USMC (ret) |
Here's health to you and to our Corps, which we are proud to serve.
In many a strife we've fought for life and never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy ever gaze on heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.
